We test for both CAE and Johne’s every year so that we can hold and maintain a clean herd. Because we show heavily, we expose our goats to a number of germs and diseases. We do our best to maintain a good distance from other herds and if we can, we show out of our trailer. We wipe and disinfect feet before we load goats on the trailer, and if we are showing out of pens, we try to keep the goats food and water to the back of the pen to enable other goats (or people 😬) from interacting with our girls. All this to say, we do our best, but no system is fool proof. So to keep our herd safe for ourselves and for our buyers, we test yearly.
Despite our herd being a clean herd, we still only use heat treated colostrum and unpasteurized cow milk from our cow that is negative tested for Johne’s. We also do not take kids off property unless they are our keepers. Our keepers are pastured separate from the kids we intend to sell. If one of our keepers turns into an animal we wish to sell, the buyer will be made fully aware that the kid has been off property.
Any goat that enters the property will be in quarantine for 6 months. They will be tested at the point of arrival, at 3 months post arrival, and again at 6 months post arrival. This might seem like a lot; however, you should count how many goats we tested in 2023. We have invested a LOT. No amount of time or tested could ever be too much for what we have invested. Think of your “heart” goat. Is she/he worth losing over bringing in a goat and taking someone’s word for their testing protocol? Food for thought! Get tested! 😄
